This is the area of London that I am first familiar with as I stayed at the Imperial Hotel on Russell Square when I first visited in the late 80s. The hotel can be seen in the background.

The Gardens was also where a scene in the first episode of the BBC TV series "Sherlock " with Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Watson) was shot.
Look at the picture below and you will see the same Imperial Hotel in the background.
The tree with the gnarled trunk in the scene below is the same tree that appears in the middle of the picture above.
