One of the last of the old school barbers in Kuching

When I was growing up in Kuching in the last millenium, going to the barber's place look very much like this scene here. Outside the establishment would be the barber pole with blue, red and white stripes twirling away.

This barber in Sekama, Kuching is one of the very last of the old school. He is well beyond the retirement age here, and is the only barber in his shop. He does have a small but steady stream of regular customers. He says that some come in even when their hair is short - it's more for the social contact and chit chat than for the hair. When he packs up his scissors for the last time, that will be it. I told him that I wanted this photograph to remind us all of days gone by.
